The United Socialist Party Campaigns on Merseyside
Our members in Halewood are involved in number of campaigns across south Liverpool
and Knowsley South -Halewood.
We have been involved with ‘The Women of Halewood’ who last year (2008), campaigned
for thier shopping centre (Halewood Raven Court) to be a mixed site of existing shop
businesses housed within the new complex, and a new major shopping retail outlet
development.
We supported this group of women throughout 2008 and even stood with them most
monday morning’s as they held vigilance outside this old shopping complex/council
‘One Stop Shop’ location.
Without this group of women protesting to the council. Councillors from Knowsley both
New Labour and the Liberal Democrats would have put in a development which would
have excluded public opinion.
At no stage throughout the demonstrations of the ‘Women of Halewood - vigilance’ did
any of the New Labour or Liberal Democrats local councillors turn up at the picket line
or give support to this group of women.
It was the courage of this group of women on their monday morning picket line, that the
council started to take heed of their concerns and made the appropriate changes at
board level to give the local people a say in this development.
We in The United Socialist Party give credit to the ‘Women of Halewood’ for standing
their ground and making the council see sense.

The United Socialist Party are currently involved with the people of south Liverpool and
south Knowsley. The two councils have proposals to find alternative method for waste
disposal involving major changes to how they sort and remove waste from their
collection points. This will be through new recycling centres plus private firms involved
to extract bio products from this waste and then on to land fill sites in the UK. Some
councils now export the residue on to third world countries. At present we have been
keeping a watching brief at most of the council’s meetings with the public. As the
councils proposals become more clear we will up date you on events.
